In the face of current challenges, the development strategy of the modern education system is aimed at training a competitive, highly qualified specialist, a carrier of high moral principles and beliefs, capable of purposefully and consistently organizing and implementing their professional activities and constructive communication. The problem of forming and improving moral and volitional qualities of a personality plays an important role in solving the strategic tasks set for higher education.

The purpose of the article is to highlight its importance for the formation of such moral and volitional qualities as respect, morality, dedication, self-confidence, etc. based on the analysis of the philosophy of the Japanese martial art of jujitsu.

The study of scientific and pedagogical literature has shown that the concept of “moral and volitional qualities” is complex and integrates the concepts of “moral qualities” and “volitional qualities”, which complement and interdepend on each other. Moral qualities determine the peculiarities of a person’s behavior in society, the nature and patterns of communication associated with the system of knowledge, worldview ideas of a person and the hierarchy of his or her moral values and attitudes. Volitional qualities act as a certain mechanism that ensures the individual’s ability to realize his or her own moral potential and successfully act in the dimension of the chosen moral values, principles and beliefs [1; 2; 5].

Useful for our study are the conclusions of Y. Kovaleva on the formation of moral and volitional qualities of a personality as a process and result of the accumulation of certain personal experience, which is carried out under the influence of a number of factors: social (the person’s environment, the nature of interaction with society, etc.), the process of self-education and self-education, specially organized educational work aimed at forming moral and volitional qualities of a personality [2].

In our opinion, martial arts, which contain significant educational, developmental potential and opportunities, are an effective means for the formation of moral and volitional qualities of a personality. We consider it appropriate to dwell on this issue in more detail. Let us consider the essence and content of this category. The leading place in the nomenclature of martial arts is occupied by jiu-jitsu.

As the study of scientific and pedagogical sources has shown, jiu-jitsu is considered an art for the weak against the strong. It teaches that one should not oppose force, but rather direct someone else’s force for one’s own benefit [4]. Thus, the basic principle of jiu-jitsu is not to go for a direct confrontation to win, not to resist, but to yield to the opponent’s onslaught, only directing his actions in the right direction until he is trapped, and then turn the enemy’s strength and actions against him [4].

The philosophical basis of jiu-jitsu is the ancient doctrine that a person builds and strengthens four main walls of his or her fortress throughout life: health, communication with others, knowledge and work, and spirituality. If one of the walls of the fortress collapses, a person’s life can collapse like a house of cards [3].

Jiu-jitsu classes are subject to certain rules of behavior and compliance with the elements of combat etiquette (traditional greetings, respect for both the winner and the loser). In other words, jiu-jitsu lives by its own moral code, which is mandatory for all athletes. Knowledge of Japanese culture, a sense of its spirit in jiu-jitsu is a part of mastering this art of fighting.

Therefore, jiu-jitsu should be viewed from the perspective of cognitive and developmental opportunities for students. As is well known, mastering any type of activity begins with knowledge of its features, which are closely related to the history of its origin. The history of jiu-jitsu is the history of Japan.

In order to understand the spirit of the art of winning, it is necessary to have an idea of the role of Confucianism in the history of this sport, to understand the code of honor of the samurai. Therefore, not only skills and abilities are developed in the classroom, but also knowledge, which is reinforced by daily work in training.

Thus, practicing such a sport as jiu-jitsu contributes not only to the physical development of the individual, but also to the intellectual development; strengthens not only health, but also the spirit; gives self-confidence; encourages creativity; and aims for success. The most important thing is that this sport contributes to the education of physically and morally healthy youth – the future of the Ukrainian nation.
